I’m a huge boxing fan – from a spectator rather than participant view – and believe it is a great sport for young people, keeping them fit, aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, and out of trouble.
I was reminded recently of an interview I gave to BBC Five Live in 2017, when I was asked which of the then Conservative front bench I would take on in a fight. Apparently I said I’d avoid getting in the ring with the then Chancellor Philip Hammond because he has a very long reach or with Boris Johnson who would have the weight advantage.
Here in Brentwood, young people – and possibly future Cabinet Ministers – are able learn the basics of boxing at Brentwood Central Boxing Club, currently based at the Brentwood Centre. I was invited to the Club recently to meet its Head Coach, Florin Nicoric, and some of the club members, volunteers, parents and coaches.
There was a real feeling of people working together and making something positive happen, which is always a good thing for a town like Brentwood.
We had a conversation about the future of the club, which will have to move from its current premises when the Brentwood Centre is refurbished in the coming months. I am convinced the club has the right attitude, positivity and backing to find a suitable solution which will allow it to continue to offer great training for young people.
