As the summer exams end there is time for GCSE and A level students to blink their way back into the light and rediscover the joy of sunshine and fresh air.
Locally we are very fortunate to have a strong and dedicated bunch of people who provide excellent activities for the young. I am gradually making my way round the area’s youth organisations to see what’s going on and hear from those involved.
1st Warley’s Family Camp at Thriftwood Scout Campsite was my first port of call in this mission, and I was very impressed by the immense amount of preparation which goes on behind the scenes to ensure everyone taking part is fed and watered, entertained, and well-equipped with frying pans, tents and beans. The enthusiasm is all the more delightful because 1st Warley lost its Head Quarters and all its kit in a devastating fire three years ago. In true Scouting spirit this has not hindered or demoralised them. They have not missed a meeting since thanks to the determination of the leaders and the support of other Scout Groups in the district.
Also on offer for our young people is National Citizen Service. Brought in by the Conservative Government in 2010 NCS is becoming a rite of passage for teenagers all over Britain, helping them to mix with people from different backgrounds and to learn team work and take responsibility. This summer, groups of teenagers from Brentwood and Ongar will travel to Yorkshire for challenging outside activities, then spend a week at the University of Essex polishing their interview and work skills, and finally head out into the constituency to take part in voluntary work of their choosing. You may see them around in their NCS T-shirts.
I have the most enormous respect for all those who take time to provide low-cost activities for children, from running toddler groups and crèches, to becoming youth leaders , These people provide an extraordinary service to the community.
