The housing market in Brentwood and Ongar is always active. After all, we live in a lovely part of England surrounded by fields and forests, and with amazing road and rail links to other parts of the UK and the world.
However, housing in this area has become unaffordable for many, including large numbers of young people, hoping to get a foot on the housing ladder. Stamp duty is a bad tax that makes the process of purchasing a home more expensive. It also stops older people from downsizing and prevents young couples who want to start a family from buying a bigger home.
New analysis has found that under plans set out by the Conservatives, families in Brentwood could save £15,724 and families in Epping Forest could save £16,286 when moving home.
That is why in October last year, Kemi Badenoch announced that a future Conservative Government would abolish stamp duty on the family home. This would encourage many people to downsize, making more larger properties becoming available to buy. And, of course, when houses change hands there’s scope for extra income for local businesses – builders, decorators, removal firms and more.
I’ll be at the Conservative Party Conference in a couple of weeks’ time and there will be more news from us about our plans for the future, and how we want to support homeowners, house buyers, and businesses to get the country moving.
