I am very pleased to support a community safety event being organised by Cllr Mary Dadd at the Budworth Hall, High Street, Ongar, on Wednesday, May 28 at 7.30pm.
Childline and fraud officers will provide the latest information on a range of dangers to family members’ safety and how they are targeted ranging from cyberbullying and substance abuse to telephone scams and exposure to inappropriate online content.
The police and other organisations who have led successful campaigns to combat abuse, exploitation and fraud will give tips on keeping youngsters and families safe.
Ongar councillor Mary Dadd, who is organising the event, said: "Despite reported crime in Essex falling overall in recent months, today’s challenges for families are still of great concern.
"The recent drama 'Adolescence' has also raised awareness of hidden struggles and dangers our children have to navigate through daily.
"Meanwhile older and more vulnerable residents are targeted by increasingly sophisticated scams via phone calls, emails and internet shopping to try to defraud them of their hard earned savings.
"Whether young or old, it is clear that staying safe now means staying informed. How sure are you that you or your family will not be a victim? Can you learn more to keep your family safe?"
Speakers at the 'Stay Safe, Stay Smart: Family Safety Awareness Event' will also include NSPCC, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex Roger Hirst, Barclays Bank, Neighbourhood Watch and Epping Forest District Council's Community Safety Partnership Officers and volunteers.
