Brentwood MP Urges Constituents to Take Part in Consultation About Future Use of Brentwood Community Hospital
The Member of Parliament for Brentwood and Ongar, Alex Burghart, is urging constituents to take part in a consultation being carried out by the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board into how Brentwood Community Hospital will be used in the future.
Currently the hospital, which was originally built in the 1930, and was rebuilt in the early 2000s, has two 25 bed wards, one of which is currently open for local patients needing intermediate care (IMC) following discharge from an acute hospital.
The Mid and South Essex ICB is currently carrying out a consultation in which two proposals have been put forward:
Option A – use all 50 beds for patients needing post-stroke care from across Mid and South Essex
Option B – use 25 beds for post-stroke patients from across Mid and South Essex, and retain the 25 IMC beds.
Alex Burghart said: “While I appreciate turning the Brentwood Community Hospital into a 50-bed stroke centre would be helpful for the Mid and South Essex ICB services, it risks changing the nature of the one hospital in my constituency.
“Brentwood Community Hospital was built for the people of Brentwood after a significant public-fundraising campaign in the 1930s, and it is important to local residents to have care in a health facility close to home where their spouses, families and friends can visit them easily and support them in their recovery.
“I will be telling the Mid and South Essex ICB, through its consultation, that I back Option B, which would see the 25 Intermediate Care beds – which are largely used by local people – retained, and I would welcome the introduction of 25 new beds for post-stroke patients. But it is good news that under either proposal we will have more beds in Brentwood and that there are plans to make better use of facilities there.”
Details of how to take part in the consultation can be found online here:

Alex added: “I very much hope the ICB will arrange some consultation events in Brentwood to enable my constituents to put their views face to face to the ICB. I have asked for a date and venue to be arranged so we can all hear more about the proposals.”
I will post my full response to the consultation on my website in due course. You will be able to find it at www.alexburghart.org.uk” ENDS
